A husband, a man, a seeker of Almighty God. He had been looking, watching, waiting for the Messiah since he could remember.

Zechariah and his wife, Elizabeth, were older in age and childless at the time we meet them in Luke, Chapter One.

The Bible states in Luke 1:5-7:

5 In the time of Herod king of Judea there was a priest named Zechariah, who belonged to the priestly division of Abijah; his wife Elizabeth was also a descendant of Aaron.

6 Both of them were righteous in the sight of God, observing all the Lord’s commands and decrees blamelessly.

7 But they were childless because Elizabeth was not able to conceive, and they were both very old.

“Both of them were righteous.” Who doesn’t want this said of them? Wow, I know I do. Those words …in the sight of God …what does He see when we are in His sight? Friend, let it be that in the sight of God - you, me, are righteous. May it be that in the sight of God - each of us are seen observing all the Lord’s commands and decrees blamelessly. Of course we are not perfect - we are, after all, human. However, we can be pure and upright in our heart before God …and that will be … in His sight!

We learn that Zechariah was a priest. The Word of God states that Zechariah’s division was on duty and according to custom, he was chosen by lot to go into the temple of the Lord to burn incense. (Luke 1:8-10) As he performed his priestly duties, an Angel of the Lord appeared.

Luke 1:11

Then an angel of the Lord appeared to him, standing at the right side of the altar of incense.

God’s timing isn’t always easy to comprehend. Many times God’s timing isn’t at all what we expect.

Isaiah 55:8-9

8 For my thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways my ways, saith the Lord.

9 For as the heavens are higher than the earth, so are my ways higher than your ways, and my thoughts than your thoughts.

Just as Zechariah and his wife knew this. They were older and childless when we met them. But friend, with God, sometimes the waiting brings something so much more than we could ever imagine.

Luke 1:12-15

12 When Zechariah saw him, he was startled and was gripped with fear.

13 But the angel said to him: “Do not be afraid, Zechariah; your prayer has been heard. Your wife Elizabeth will bear you a son, and you are to call him John.

14 He will be a joy and delight to you, and many will rejoice because of his birth, 15 for he will be great in the sight of the Lord.

To be told that your prayer has been heard by an Angel standing in your midst must have been beyond overwhelming to our HUMAN of the Bible Reflection for August.

Luke 1:13

But the angel said to him: “Do not be afraid, Zechariah; your prayer has been heard. Your wife Elizabeth will bear you a son, and you are to call him John.

When Zechariah responded - he had questions.

Luke 1:18

Zechariah asked the angel, “How can I be sure of this? I am an old man and my wife is well along in years.”

How could this be? He and his wife were older. What is the possibility that they could have a son now? They had waited so long. They had waited so many years. BUT GOD! He knows the plans He has for each of us. His ways, His timing don’t always make sense to us or those around us. We find that after we have waited and He has heard our prayers - the outcome is far greater than what we even hoped for. God exceeds our expectations and it is all for our good and for His glory!

As long as we are seeking Him and trusting Him while doing all we know our part is - He will answer in His time. We will see the purpose in His strategy - in His answer - in the waiting. Most of all, God will be gloried in us and through it all.

May it be that we stay the course with God. May it be that we stick with a friend or family member in the waiting. May it be that we all share in the joy of God’s timing and answers.

Luke 1:57-58

57 When it was time for Elizabeth to have her baby, she gave birth to a son.

58 Her neighbors and relatives heard that the Lord had shown her great mercy, and they shared her joy.

God knew what He wanted to do in the HUMAN of the Bible Reflection for this month - Zechariah. He and his wife were older in age and unable to have children. They were faithful to trust God and both of them were righteous in His sight. In God’s ways and timing - He answered their prayers for a son. An Angel of the Lord delivered the message to Zechariah that their prayers had been heard. Joy ensued among those that journeyed with them as God fulfilled His promise and their son was born.

Friend - no matter your circumstances, no matter where life finds you today, no matter where you have been, no matter your concern for the future - GOD KNOWS! He sees you. He has the perfect timing for you. He hears you. He is faithful to answer you!
